Mitchell was unable to read or write. In 1957, when McLeod was away from the Pilbara for an extended period, artist Sam Fullbrook, at Mitchell’s request, returned to the Pilbara from Derby to handle his correspondence. Scribed by Fullbrook, this letter from Mitchell to McLeod reveals the matters that were occupying the minds of the group’s leaders. The ‘Wallal business’ refers to the group’s campaign to challenge Western Australia’s ‘leper line’ legislation.
